Because It's Friday
Rumor has been that UP wanted her done for the sesquicentennial of the "Golden Spike", but I don't see how that's going to happen. They are basically hand-building the entire locomotive.

ReplyDeleteMy recollection is that UP had their own coal mines in Wyoming. The coal wasn't especially of good quality, so their locomotives had larger than typical fireboxes.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, they did convert 844 and 3985 to oil. (3985 has been laid up for maintenance, which will be done after 4014's back on the road.)
Yep, Comrade, read that on a wiki page. Said the UP Big Boys had unusually large fire grates because of the poor quality coal they used. I knew they had done those two, but it would have been nice to see a real old steamer...but I guess the cinders and such would be a constant threat that the oil won’t be.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I saw 844 on the Denver - Frontier Days run several years back, and it was on oil then.
ReplyDeleteIf you're out east, the CT Valley RR uses coal (or did the time I visited).
