Russian Wrinkle in the Investigarion

The FBI is investigating whether a top Russian banker with ties to the Kremlin illegally funneled money to the National Rifle Association to help Donald Trump win the presidency, two sources familiar with the matter have told McClatchy.

FBI counterintelligence investigators have focused on the activities of Alexander Torshin, the deputy governor of Russia’s central bank who is known for his close relationships with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and the NRA, the sources said.
A lot remains to be proven. I have little doubt that Mueller and the FBI will ferret out the truth.

But, and this is a huge but, if it turns out that the NRA was a front organization for the Russians, then the NRA will have done to itself what Bill Clinton, Gabby Giffords, Sarah Brady, Pete Shields and other have never been able to do.

Pete Brownell, who was elected president of the NRA last year, needs to jump on this with booth feet while wearing track shoes.

  1. While I won't discount what is said, I'd have to see some serious proof to believe it.

There is a lot of innuendo tossed about, and so much has been proven false. I don't tend to believe it any more.....any of it. Especially the stuff that tries to trash Trump. It is almost as if the opposition thinks that if they say enough Bad Things about him, it might someday be true.

All of the above does not mean that the statement isn't true, just that the Other Side's credibility is lacking with most people.

Never forget, even the Enquirer sometimes publishes a true story.

  2. Facinating, especially as McClatchy is generally considered to be right of center. I don't accept it or discount it, I'm just interested to see Mueller is interested. B., it's better to not try to discredit it right away, just wait for the factual story and then check the facts.

  3. Seems like it would be kinda hard to prove. But didn't Brennan say that their initial interest in the Russia case had to do with possible inflows of Russian money into the campaign? Could this be what he was talking about?

  4. looking at it from the angle of the Russians, who were mighty invested in disrupting American elections no matter what - as the overall uptick in Russian interference in Western elections prove - using existing GOP-favoring organizations to funnel money to help trump "win" was a no-brainer. The Citizens United ruling has made it so much harder to track where campaign money comes FROM that this sort of foreign interference was inevitable.

I don't doubt the story. Would love to see it confirmed though.

  5. Money is pretty trackable for the FBI. We should find out whether something happened or not.

I'm still astounded at how Russia/ the USSR went from

Evil Empire to a nation oligarchs (American oligarchs!) envy

and simultaneously from the Enlightened Future of Humanity to clever electioneers running the USA.
