A Florida sheriff’s deputy mistook the sound of an acorn hitting his patrol cruiser for a gunshot and fired multiple times at the SUV where a handcuffed Black man was sitting in the backseat, officials said.

Investigators viewing the video from deputy Jesse Hernandez’s body camera saw an acorn falling just before shots were fired, an internal affairs report by the sheriff’s office concluded. The acorn bounced off the patrol vehicle’s roof.
We have some trigger-happy cops in this country. It's time something got done. Popping off a magazine's worth of rounds at a handcuffed and secured suspect because an acorn dropped on the car? He couldn't tell the difference between an acorn and a gunshot *and* he thought he'd been shot?
Good thing he quit, but did he also turn in his POST certificate?
17 rounds from less than 30 feet at a person secured in a police suv. 0 hits. No word where the bullets went, families with kids were audible screaming to get to cover and in fear.
ReplyDeleteMy dog HATES acorns hitting the roof. It scares him and he shakes in fear.
ReplyDeleteMy dog is not a cop, though.
I used to be a strong supporter of all our law enforcement personnel. Now I can not say that.
Some cops are certainly heroic in their service to the community, but I have been stopped by a cop because he just wanted to hassle me. And I am probably the most law abiding citizen around. I would not take a hundred dollar bill from a locker room bench just because it was not mine.
So in short, I don't trust the police which is in today's world the right option. It is too bad but I think it's the best way to deal with those who so often act as Gestapo agents for those who would steal our freedom.
Sad they don't have tests for unsound minds. For Cops especially. Probably politicians too.

w3aki, but if politicians were given a test for unsound minds, we would be without a lot of them. Who would create our laws?? Who would govern?
ReplyDeleteHey, wait a minute!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've worked two different jobs that are statistically more dangerous than being a cop, and I've never felt the need to empty a clip into anything at all.

Even the Air Force taught me how to handle a weapon while under fire and I don't recall that falling acorns required a shoot at will response.
ReplyDeleteIf every cop is on a hair trigger, how does that square with "protect and serve"?
OTOH, I did have a very pleasant conversation with a young patrolman this week who stopped by to check out my son's latest project car delivery while being offloaded. We shared photos of common interest projects and the ones we liked the most. Then he had to respond to a call, but was calm and collected.
Training and proper vetting can make a big difference and save lives.
