Your Sunday Morning Turboprop Noise

A Saunders-Roe "Princess" flying boat:

That was the only one that ever flew. By then, thanks to the widespread construction of runways for the Second World War, flying boats were obsolete.

  1. Big, fast (for a prop bird), and heavy... And interestingly, it looks like a laminar flow wing, based on the dipped nose profile on the high speed fly-by. Nice find, thanks!

  2. I've not seen any other sound footage of the Princess.

  3. And while the Brits were touting this thing, Lockheed reps were showing Third World leaders a picture of a Constellation saying "Now THIS is what can come to your capital if you lay down THIS much concrete. And we know where you can get a deal on the concrete."

  4. The PBY Catalina was the best, most beautiful, flying boat. All others are mere pretenders.

  5. Nope, I’ll take the Flying Porcupine, the Short Sunderland. Any flying boat that can face off against six JU88C fighters, shooting one down and severely damaging another, before driving the rest off has my vote.

  6. No, I'll go with either the Boeing 314 or the Martin M-130.

  7. Too bad we couldn't have commissioned the building of more lakes. Then we could have all traveled in style.

  9. Funny, seafury. Good idea. Everybody love lakes.
I have a few hours of UL dual in a Quicksilver amphibian trainer out of Lodi, CA. There is nothing more fun you do with your clothes on than landing on an irrigation canal in a pontoon UL. To GA student pilots (me) every splash-down felt like a crash the angle is so steep. But the speed so slow the touchdown is light as a feather and water run post touchdown was about 20 meters. Too much fun. I want to live in a flying boat.

    Like too much fun
