Talkie Report: Bohemian Rhapsody

It does not suck.

Go to see Rami Malek's performance as Freddie Mercury. If he's not nominated for a "best actor" Oscar, then the theater where they host the awards ceremony should be razed.

But don't go if you're expecting a biopic. At best, it should be labeled "based on a true story," for considerable liberties were taken.

But still, it's one of the best pictures that I've seen in a good while.

And hell, it's a cheap concert. You'll probably stay through the credits for the music.

For your viewing/listening pleasure, here is Queen's set at Live Aid in 1985:

  1. I have that video on my drive, and Bowie's set also. I read that they changed some stuff to make a dramatic story line, and played down Freddie's flair for, well, let's call it partying, while exaggerating the tensions within the band.
I'll see it, though, if only to see their beat-by-beat recreation of the Live Aid set, which has been called the best live rock performance of all time more than once.
I'm a hard rock guitar player, and hard rock doesn't get much better than Queen, so I was already interested in this project from when I first heard of it.
    Thanks for the recommendation.

  2. I watched it last Saturday - first show, just to make sure I got a good seat. Loved the whole thing - I have most of Queen's discography, but I'm strongly tempted to pick up the soundtrack. A few friends are bummed that they'll not see it for a couple of weeks (they live out on the fringes of civilization), but they are jazzed about the good response to it. We were all children of the 70's & 80's, so Queen was part of the soundtrack to our lives growing up.

  3. I teared up while watching the Live Aid segment of the movie.
