Yet Another Police Shooting

A 40-year-old woman who family members said called 911 to report a possible assault in the alley behind her home Saturday night was fatally shot by a Minneapolis police officer.

The shooting happened at the end of the alley on W. 51st Street between Washburn and Xerxes avenues S. in the city’s Fulton neighborhood.

The woman, Justine Damond, from Sydney, Australia, and her fiancé lived in the 5000 block of Washburn.

Three sources with knowledge of the incident said Sunday that two officers in one squad car, responding to the 911 call, pulled into the alley. Damond, in her pajamas, went to the driver’s side door and was talking to the driver. The officer in the passenger seat pulled his gun and shot Damond through the driver’s side door, sources said. No weapon was found at the scene.
Shooting a woman who was unarmed, in her PJs, and who was the complaintant in the 911 call? And shooting her not just once, but several times?

I've kind of wondered what would happen when the cops got to shooting white folk, especially women, under sketchy circumstances.

Guess we're going to find out.

  1. Bet that was REALLY loud in the car too.

  2. This seems like a real WTF moment. I wonder what else will come out about this.

  3. The details out so far make absolutely no sense. That the officers failed to active their cameras after the shooting is also a violation of department policy, let alone the fact nothing was rolling before that. I will be interested how long passed (or will pass) before interviews are done, as I am (sadly) expecting the two officers stories to exactly match...for better or worse. From what I recall of studies of such situations, the stories should never mesh completely, it's just "amazing" how they usually do. Humans in stressful situations have very skewed recall of details.

  4. Cops are now like those Japanese swords. If it's drawn from its scabbard, it has to draw blood. If someone calls the cops, someone must be executed.

This will be my criteria from now on when considering dialing the death number. Am I prepared for someone near me to die?

  5. So some cop was scared to the gills and went and shot thru his own car to kill an innocent person.
Does anyone 'really' think he won't escape without legal penalty?
He will of course lose his current job, but in a year or so he could easily apply at some other cop shop and actually have "experience" too. He will likely face some civil penalties that will leave him in need of profitable employment.
I will be especially surprised if he ever sees the inside of jail over this, "cold blooded murder" or not.
Cops have a perpetual "get out of jail free" card, I can't see how even this will change that.
We have come to a sad and sick place where "law enforcement" frequently means death by cop.

  6. Now confirmed, cops have yet to be interviewed. Why does it make me think they need time to hammer out their story. Even better, the model of camera on the officers, if activated, has a no sound, 30 second buffer that shows the last 30 seconds leading up to the activation. The fact that neither officer switched their camera on during the 30 seconds after the shooting should be criminal, in and of itself.

  7. And now confirmed the shooting cop has refused to be interviewed. Police are floating reports of a "loud noise nearby".

  8. So the cops heard a loud noise and responded by shooting the pajama-clad woman who was calmly talking to one of the cops?
