Shorter Trump: "Yeah, I Did It. So, What?"

Story here.

He's right that he had the legal right to do what he did.

It was short-sighted and imbecilic. It showed that Trump has no understanding of the reasons why intelligence information is classified. It showed a complete lack of judgment. Since Russia seems to have a pipeline to the Oval Office, it will, more than likely than not, have ramifications as to what our friends and allies choose to share with us. It was, at best, the actions of a child showing off a shiny toy: "I get great intel! Look at this intel! It's amazing intel, the best!" At worst, it was the actions of a paid actor proving his worth to his paymasters.

But it was legal. And as to why this story was leaked, read this from Erick Erickson.

And this:
The heads of 28 NATO member states will be [at the NATO summit] and they’re all anticipating a meeting tailored to a petulant child who needs to be entertained:
“Even a brief NATO summit is way too stiff, too formal, and too policy heavy for Trump. Trump is not going to like that,” said Jorge Benitez, a NATO expert with the Atlantic Council, a Washington think tank.
Organizers are scrapping the normal declaration that accompanies such meetings because they think Trump won’t be happy. You see, one of the primary reasons for NATO’s existence is its adversarial relationship to Russia and we all know how Trump feels about that.

After Trump’s shenanigans this past week, let’s just say that it’s unlikely anyone at the meeting will feel all that comfortable sharing anything but small talk with President Loose Lips. According to Foreign Policy:
“People are scared of his unpredictability, intimidated by how he might react knowing the president might speak his mind — or tweet his mind,” the former official said. Or, as another current senior NATO official put it before the meeting: “We’re bracing for impact.”

  1. Bonus points, the source of the intel was Israel...no points for guessing how they feel about their source being threatened.

  2. Nixon sought to put an end to the Watergate investigation, impeached for obstruction of justice.
Clinton was impeached for impeding a grand jury investigation, obstruction of justice.

Trump fires Comey, stating to Lester Holt that one of the reasons he decided to do so was because of the Russia thing. Obstruction?
Trump tweets out to Comey "Better hope there aren't any 'tapes'... Threatening a possible witness. Obstruction?
Today it is reported Trump asked Comey in January to end the investigation into Flynn's Russian connections. Obstruction?

Perhaps I do have TDS. But for crying out loud, how can anyone seriously defend Trump after all the lies, missteps, profiteering, hypocrisy, and general idiocy coming from this guy. I, for one, am ready to get rid of this guy and move on.

  3. Trump and Crew are now heading to Israel - I'm sure they'll get a warm reception. Maybe Donald will pay weregild for those assets he compromised...oh yeah, he doesn't pay his debts (or taxes). Nevermind.

  5. The really sad thing is that Gen. McMaster went before the press on Monday to assure everyone that Trump didn't tell the Russians anything of note, only to have Trump fess up the next morning.

If McMaster doesn't march into the Oval Office, drop his collar devices on the desk and walk back out, he has little left in the way of honor.

  6. Nah, McMaster's comment was surgically precise. Nothing Trump has said has contradicted what McMaster said, but it has removed all wiggle and denial room.

  7. CP88, you're describing a half-truth. A half-truth is a whole lie.

  9. According to WaPo, the intelligence that Trump shared with Russia is that al CIAda in Syria is equipped to use laptop computers in airliner terrorist attacks.

First, if this was such a dangerous secret, then why did WaPo tell us what it is?

Secondly, if Russia gained intelligence that airliners might be targeted by terrorists, wouldn't we want Putin to tell us?

There are SO MANY truly horrible things this President and his Administration are doing, but the MSM is diverting our attention to these "outrages."

  10. Deadstick, tragically no. Given that the President can unclassify whatever the hell he wishes to, he has near free reign. McMaster carefully drew a line in the sand that had a giant curve in it to encircle Donnie....Donnie then redrew the line as straight, but much further forward. McMaster provided cover for his President, Donnie elected (deliberately or not) to flatten that cover.

  11. I wonder what Israel thinks of Iran getting this intel by way of Russia?

  13. Since when did "tourerists bearing laptops" become "news?" Been opening, inspecting and often confiscating laptops at the borders since the Cheney Administration. Tablets now, and telephones. Cameras even.

This is actually a great example of both sides do it: both sides are dazzled by the distractin.
