Are those upgraded engines? Was the DC8 flying those back in the day?
ReplyDeleteUpgraded. The original DC-8 had straight turbojets (JT3's and 4's) with almost no bypass. As a bonus, they could reverse the outboard engines to increase their descents and slowdown a bit...but it shook the hell outta the plane. The last ones were upgraded to CFM56's (high bypass).
ReplyDeleteSecond bonus, the reason for those cabin curtains and dividers was allegedly that if you could see from front to back on the old B-707 and DC-8, you could see a slight fuselage bend when they turned!
Yep, definitely upgraded engines! SO much quieter... Try standing in the back of an A320 and you can watch the WHOLE fuselage twist in turbulence... SCARY!!! I'd take an old Douglas or Boeing bird any day!!!

ReplyDeleteAh, yes, the old "slow down and hurry down" exercise. 707s could also reverse the outboards (and of course experienced controllers "never" got themselves into a situation when they needed that). But we knew they could and would sometimes ask. Pilots didn't like to because it jostled the customers. Hell, they often didn't want to use the speed brakes (spoilers) either for the same, although less pronounced, reason.
