Germany defeated France (in the World Cup quarterfinals).

  1. I much prefer the reported exchange between Kenneth Clarke and Margaret Thatcher after the 1990 loss to Germany by England in the World Cup semi-final:

    KC: Isn't it terrible about losing to the Germans at our national sport, Prime Minister?

    MT: I shouldn't worry too much - we've beaten them twice this century at theirs.
