Because It's Friday

North Korea:

This appears to be working steam on an electrified railway line. Between that, and the sight of a horse-drawn cart in an urban area, says something about the economic conditions in North Korea. I'm surprised that the North Korean "minders" allowed the video footage to be shot.

  1. How neat, the engineer gets a steam bath! Wonder how he sees WTF is down the tracks. Maybe if the Fearless leader can't see what's coming they decided nobody else should either.
Any idea what needs to be greased?

  2. I don't think the squeak is from the running gear. I'd guess some sort of automatic oil lube pump. Pretty bad steam leak from the air compressor for the brakes.

That locomotive appears to be in sad shape.

  3. The North Koreans seem rather proud of their ingenuity in coming up with things like this. It's like they're saying, "see, you've imposed crippling sanctions on us, but we're still finding ways to survive! So nyah, up yours!"

Yeah, that locomotive's in sad shape... but it still runs, kinda, so nya!

    Koreans are nuts. Just sayin'.
