Digital House: Not Only "No", but "Hell, No"!

Like hell this is a good idea:

If you can hook into your house from outside of it, so can hackers and the authorities (which are nothing more than hackers with guns). Do you really want your home to be able to tell whomever what the temperature of your house is or what is the settings on your hot-water heater or what's in your refrigerator? Do you like the idea of your television reporting your usage?

The past had its own level of suckitude. But at least it took a shoe-leather cop to do this kind of spying on you.

  1. I have a question about the water faucet too. Do you have to put electronic faucets in for that to work? It would be very pricey. If it does it at the mains then you would have to repressurise the whole house. Besides the hacking problem, what kind of billion dollar house is this?

  2. w3ski... Forget all that...

None of the stupid little devices have enough smarts for more than passing swag at security.
"The internet of things" So far that's gadgets talking using the "net" like its a secure thing
and limited to no security. Just consider the oven or stove running wasting your power/gas
to the joy of some script kiddie or maybe turning the temp up on the fridge and the house
when your gone for a few days to come back to a 90 degree house reeking of rotten food.

    It needs work.

    Eck!

  3. I have a NEST thermostat, and I understand the risk involved, but like the power savings (I am seeing some, more than I expected given I previously had a programmable unit and was actually using it properly) and remote monitor/adjust ability. I am also able to shutdown the WiFi if I wish to.

  4. how long until the utility companies make reporting mandatory? until the furnace makers and appliance makers make it a condition of warranties?
