    I'm afraid that this is the sort of nonsense that got me to stop reading Scientific American. There's no science at all here, but a fair amount of personal preference leaking through (the west texas comment certainly wasn't there by accident - why not New Mexico?).

    SciAm has developed a reputation as being particularly biased on climate science issues, and so I just tune them out now.
