I have no idea why Jake is only resting his head on that bad, rather than lie completely on it.

Jake is resting his head on that bed because he is a cat, because he can, because he will not be bound by your strictures on where and how to capture his flying ZZZZZZ'z, because today this and only this is the comfortable position, because his decisions and your judgements are not and will never be connected, because..... because.

My dog does things like that, although she is usually on her bed with her head hanging off of it. Or on a chair with her head hanging down.
