Another Harbinger of Suck

Katherine Heigl. The studio did not screen "One for the Money" for the critics, which is a pretty solid indication that the movie likely is going to blow rotten chunks.

Apparently, from the early published reviews from the first showing, the movie is pretty awful.

Too bad. There are eighteen books in the Stephanie Plum series and it could have been a lucrative movie franchise. I know a fair number of people who are fans of the series and all of them were more or less appalled at the idea of casting Heigl in the role.

I was thinking of seeing it, but even an early showing is six bucks in these parts. I'll wait until the DVD hits the buck-a-night Redbox.

Update: as of Friday evening, Jan. 27th, it is 0 for 22 on the Rotten Tomatoes website. That is Gigli-level awful.

  1. There's something massively unappealing about Katherine Heigl. You know how some actors, they have a certain air about them that makes them seem like they'd be cool to have a beer with in real life? Heigl has the exact opposite of that. I wonder if the reason she's in terrible movies is that the good scripts go to people who are better actors AND more pleasant to be around.

  2. Heigl apparently bought the rights to the book, for she produced the movie. So it was a pure vanity project.

This could have been a real money-making franchise, for there was a ready audience. They could have made several movies and pulled in a billion plus. But not now, nobody's going to touch it. Heigl killed this as surely as Kathleen Turner killed V.I. Warshawski.

  3. Anybody who would cast a tall statuesque Anglo blond for a role that is, in the books, played by a stubby dark-haired olive-complected Italian girl who spends half of each book eating donuts and has the well-endowed figure to prove it (and half her plots wouldn't work if she were a blonde Anglo bombshell), is operating on less than a full set of cylinders, yo.

Ohn wait, Heigl did this to *herself*?! Dumber than a box of rocks. I'm not going to even watch it once the DVD hits the buck-a-night Redbox.

As for the books, they're something I pick up when I want some mindless hilarity, though the later books do introduce a bit more darkness into the picture (they're still funny as bleep though!).
