A sweet grandmother
Telephoned St. Joseph 's Hospital. She timidly asked,
"Is it possible to speak to someone who can tell me how a patient is doing?"
The operator said,
"I'll be glad to help, dear. What's the name and room number of the patient?"
The grandmother in her weak, tremulous voice said,
"Norma Findlay, Room 302."
The operator replied,
"Let me put you on hold while I check with the nurse's station for that room."
After a few minutes, the operator returned to the phone and said,
"I have good news. Her nurse just told me that Norma is doing well. Her blood pressure is fine; her blood work just came back normal and her Physician, Dr. Cohen, has scheduled her to be discharged tomorrow."
The grandmother said,
"Thank you. That's wonderful. I was so worried. God bless you for the good news."
The operator replied,
"You're more than welcome. Is Norma your daughter?"
The grandmother said,
"No, I'm Norma Findlay in Room 302. No one tells me shit."
I notice that the reporter couldn't even be bothered to spell HIPAA correctly. God bless the media; they could sure use it.

This is most likely a county hospital. Check -- yeppers, just went to their web site. They're overcrowded because folks in Bexar County are losing their jobs and can no longer afford to go to their own doctors, and also because folks in Bexar County also, until recently, didn't want to pay more taxes in order to expand the county hospital. So why don't folks go to the private hospitals' emergency rooms instead? Well, thing is, the private hospitals are increasingly closing their emergency departments, so it's not likely this guy would have seen a doctor at one of the few private hospitals still having an ER open any sooner. Plus the patients would have just ended up at County anyhow once a doctor looked at'em, said "Yeppers, you're stable, you're being transferred to County" and boom!
ReplyDeleteSo anyhow, overcrowded county hospitals are indeed the future of health care for we peons here in America under the Republican plan. That way they get to reserve the cushy private hospitals for the oligarchs and their relatives. The end game is similar to Costa Rico, where there is one hospital system for the oligarchs -- the good ones -- and another hospital system for the peons -- the overcrowded, dirty, dangerous hospitals. And if a few (million) serfs die because they don't get the health care they need when they need it -- so what. For our oligarchs, a serf's life is worth less than a dog's. Less, even, because there are over 5 billion serfs on the planet and far fewer pedigreed dogs...
