Profiles in Cowardice?

When you take a prominent stand on a controversial issue, as Rep. Stupak did, and then announce that you are not seeking re-election, as Stupak just did, it is hard to escape the suspicion that the line of "I want to spend more time with my family" is not just code for "I'm leaving before I get my ass kicked."

  1. I'm sure while he was campaigning he didn't say; "I want to spend less time with my family".

  2. The real problem is that he took several different prominent stands on the issue, so now everybody hates him.

Except me. I was all set to send a campaign contribution to his primary challenger. He just saved me $100, so I like him now.
