Typewriters.
Here they are:
As you can see, some of the numbers on the Royal go below the line of the type. Both the Remington and the Royal use horizontal lines for fractions, the Olympia does not. The Remington has a 3/4ths key, the others do not. The Remington and the Royal use two vertical strokes in the dollar sign, the Olympia does not. The Remington uses a smaller typeface. The Olympia has a numeral 1, the other two use the lower case l. Because the Olympia has a key for the number 1, its upper-case character is an exclamation point. For the other two, you have to combine an apostrophe and a period to make an exclamation point.
And, of course, the Remington is double-spacing some of the time after letters.

COMMENT MODERATION IS IN EFFECT UFN. This means that if you are an insulting dick, nobody will ever see it.
Thanks! I love the Royal type the best! What you are talking about with those numbers is that they are "Old Style Numerals", which means they have descenders--which you noticed--but also ascenders, on the 4, 5, 6, and 8.
ReplyDeleteI need to spend some time doing some research into troubleshooting typewriters. I need to find out how to fix the Remington.
ReplyDeleteThere's probably some cog with some worn teeth, so every time the pawl tries to engage a worn tooth and skips, the carriage moves two spaces instead of one.
ReplyDeleteCould be. I'm afraid to start messing with it.
