But you have to be damn certain that, if you are flying by Visual Flight Rules, that you can get down without going too close to a cloud. In this instance, I knew that it was clear 50 miles ahead, so there was no real reason to run around under the clouds. I have to be really certain of that in order to do this, and this time, I was.
The black pipe you see cutting across the upper right of the photo is a bracing tube that runs from the firewall to the wing strut. Fabric-covered airplanes (or ones that were designed to be fabric-covered) cannot use their skin as part of the structure, in the way a Cessna 172 does, so they have a lot of internal bracing.
