Two things:

The Middle Easterners along with the Latino and black males didn't want a women to be in charge. "The women should know their place."
Observing the only neighbors I have from that part of the world (Syria)is that they have some strange ways of doing thing. The father never seems to have anything to do with the children, the two women there (assume one is grandmother) do everything by themselves. They have been here long enough for their middle schoolers to speak without an accent. Never have heard any of the adults speak.
Decades ago, in a book I'm pretty sure was titled "The Arab-Israeli Wars", it was posited that Arab males all grow up with an inferiority complex. That being because their fathers essentially abandon them once they are no longer toddlers, ignoring them until they are old enough to start to do 'man' stuff. Thus, those little boys grow up feeling abandoned, maybe unworthy.
