First, I apologize for sending this to you. I would have sent it to your publisher and editor-in-chief, but, probably for good reasons, those emails are hard to find. Feel free to forward this, if you like.
I've been a reader for many, many years. When my schedule was fluid, I bought the paper from newsstands or convenience stores. More recently, I've had a Sunday and digital subscription.
But I can no longer continue. My perception has been that, when it comes to the suitability for the two major candidates for the presidency, the Times has been slanting its coverage. I have read very little coverage of Trump's insane ramblings at his rallies and on social media and lots of coverage of every misstep of Biden's.
When one considers the real threat that Trump poses to our democracy, especially in the wake of this week's decision by the Supreme Court, this makes no sense to me.
The only thing that I can conclude is that the Times believes that it sold more newspapers, both in print and digital, when Trump was in office, and that it wants to see those profits return. Which means that the Times is willing to run the risk of seeing our republic destroyed if it can make a buck in the process.
I don't have to be a part of that. I won't be a part of that.
After the Sunday paper is delivered tomorrow, I will cancel my subscription.

ReplyDeleteI have had a digital subscription to the NYT for a while to be able to read Paul Krugman, but as of next month, no more. I used to be able to weasel my way around the paywall to read him and maybe I need to try that again.

What a great idea, sending an email on cancellation. I canceled my NYT subscription a year ago for similar reasons, related to their coverage of LGBTQ issues. The "Gray Lady" has been wearing a MAGA cap for quite a while.

There's a limit to how many different people I want to pay. I'll stick with the Guardian ($5/mo) and the Beeb for now.
ReplyDeleteIt's whole lot less expensive than the NYT or Post. I've been speaking to one of the principals because I canceled my subscription. She asked what was wrong and I said nothing was wrong. It was just my age and I only do geo-political forecasting when I'm interested in something or compelled to by circumstances such as the plague. What does that have to with the price of beans? You can sample from my account and take it's measure with no risk.

It would be nice if some sort of pay-per-article site existed. Buy a number of tokens from them, spend on individual articles at various outlets. Those outlets would then redeem them, in bulk, monthly for actual cash, thereby keeping transaction costs down.
ReplyDeleteThere are far more news outlets and worthy podcasters I'd sign up for as a paying customer, if I my income was sufficient, but a few dozen $15s adds up quickly.
This is even more fascinating than the Q-anon types! Leftist conspiracy theories do not get the coverage their hilarity warrants. This is because the media is in such lockstep with their worldview, of course.

ReplyDeleteIt certainly is! Fascinating that the evidence can produce reactions so disconnected from the inferences to be drawn from that evidence, though.
