Ninety-One Felony Counts

If Tyrone from the `hood was indicted on a total of 91 counts in two states and two Federal districts, he'd be sitting his ass in a cell on a no-bail hold, awaiting trial.

But if you're a white billionaire with delusions of godhood, three of those courts let you stroll on your promise to apear and the fourth required you to post a minimal bail.

Clark was right ten years ago and he is still right today: Burn the fucking system to the ground.

  1. Tyrone probably wouldn't appear.

That's the reason. It ain't racist, it's the fact that some folks would show for court, and others....simply would be busy elsewhere.

    There's a difference.

  2. B, yes, you are Racist, but too obtuse to realize it.

  3. I agree with Clark wIth most of his examples, but call BS on his attack on teachers. Clark obviously never taught school, especially in this age of school shootings. The conservatives that try to destroy all unions have been trashing teachers since 81. 180 days? Try night's and weekends grading papers, conference with feckless parents that blame everything on the teacher and the summers in college continuing education you pay for.

If teaching were so easy, why are many states not filling the unfilled positions? Why are so many young teachers quitting before they complete 5 years?

  4. Go right ahead and tell us about your Black friend now, B. You understand the reference? The simple fact is whatever you personally believe, that statement of yours is prima facie racist.

  5. “Racist” can be a personal attack or a statement if fact.

    It’s borderline in this case.

Allowed, but I’m fingering the yellow card.

  6. Some people, like the author of the linked essay, wouldn't know ideological consistency if you put a pound and a half of it in a sock and used it to beat them to their knees.

  7. The sad reality is there is no data on B.’s contention, but there is on pretrial detention…and it’s not pretty:

  8. Took all of 0.004 sec on Google to find this (and many others)

    https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/0734016815583350
    (I can't embed either)

Lots more of that if (if!) you bother to look.

Call me a racist, the facts of my statement are correct. I know it makes you feel all squirmy that there are differences in behavior for different racial demographics, but facts are stubborn things. Feelz don't matter, facts do.

  10. B, in the summary of significant findings from your article, "Black defendants made up the majority of pretrial services defendants and FTA in the sample (52%)." So if a majority of the survey is represented by one particular race, wouldn't the findings be slewed toward the said race?

Seems like a predetermined outcome for your 'study'. As if you want to show that most defendants that don't show up are black, so let's use a majority of cases where the defendants are black, thereby ensuring that the point we are trying to make is 'verified'. A bit biased, wouldn't you say?

  11. One would think that would be self explanatory…

  12. Dale: Go read the methodology and see. The percentages of the people not showing was overwhelmingly black. Percentage of sample.

Of you could bother to look for other studies which show the same thing as what I posted. If you wanted to find the truth rather than what you want to believe. If you cared that your beliefs might be incorrect. If you were open minded and enlightened enough to conceiver that you might be wrong and wanted to learn the truth.

I understand that you don't like the truth. That it harms your worldview. I get that you find it unpalatable.
But you gotta face facts rather than live on Feelz.

  13. "I understand that you don't like the truth. That it harms your worldview."

The truth does not harm my worldview. It helps me make money doing geo-political forecasting. Explain your truth using first principles. How do you know that?

  14. B: Of course the percentage OF THE SAMPLE of people who did not show was overwhelmingly black. Can't you see that MOST of the people in the sample were black? That skews the results toward the point the pollster wanted.

Kind of like polling 60% Republicans and 40% Democrats. A majority of those polled would not vote for Biden. A minority would vote for Biden. Therefore, Biden is not liked by most of the citizens. A conclusion based on flawed initial data.

It is the inherent rule in statistics, mathematics, computer science, et al: Garbage In, Garbage Out.

And hey, you are the one that pointed toward the 'analysis' a proof of your position. I'm pointing out the methodology was flawed.

  15. Clean up on aisle 8 has occurred Herr Comrade.

  16. Ok, Dale, Try to understand.

IF YOU READ THE METHODOLOGGY, they corrected for the fact that the sample was more than 50% black. (Of course, that should tell you something right there).

Again, Read the entire article to see how they got their conclusions. Don't just dismiss it because you don't like the results ...Or use that wonderful tool they call "Google" to find a whole shitload of other studies which came to similar conclusions.

Face the reality. I know it hurts folks like you to do so, like a vampire in the sunlight....but try.

  17. B., actually, based upon the conclusion, it’s the Hispanic males that are the most likely to show for serious felony cases…so jail everyone else*. The problem in this particular study is 1) It contradicts multiple other studies 2) Cannot explain why it contradicts them 3) Fails to correct the top line figures for the variables that show statistically significant impacts on appearance (delays in trial, length of detention before release, etc.).

*Won’t work, because of the errors noted above.

    ReplyDelete
  18. B -surely you can explain the methodology using first principles then? I'm easy.

    ReplyDelete
  19. CP: I noticed you stated that this study contradicted other studies.

Of course, you claim that but failed to provide EVEN ONE study to refute it.

    Interesting omission, doncha think?

  20. Okey doke. Let's start with embedding (sic). I copy the link to Notepad and then you can go to it. Something to do with the blog software.

    Let's start with: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/0734016815583350
An Exploratory Assessment of Race and Gender-Specific Predictors of Failure to Appear in Court Among Defendants Released via a Pretrial Services Agency...

Relying on data culled from Dallas County, Texas, the present study assessed the predictors of FTA for defendants released via the county’s pretrial services agency and across various strata, including race and gender. Results of this exploratory analysis suggest that pretrial services defendants reporting indigence were more likely to fail to appear for all demographic groups, and felony defendants tended to appear at higher rates for most groups. Other predictors associated with failure to appear varied across gender and race including celerity, criminal history, marital status, and length of criminal involvement.

For starters, the sample size is too small to say anything about anything. Sage publishes a lot of things, but none appear to be peer reviewed. Those two things obviate examining the math using the garbage in garbage out principle.

This is the way of sophists - create a straw man argument and make everyone else argue against it.

What of exhibit B so to speak? This is a newer article with a much larger sample size

How race impacts who is detained pretrial
The government hasn’t collected national data on the race or ethnicity of people awaiting trial in jail since 2002. We review the academic literature published since then to offer a more current assessment of racial disparities in pretrial detention....

As of 2002 (the last time the government collected this data nationally), about 29% of people in local jails were unconvicted – that is, locked up while awaiting trial or another hearing.

My basic view is if the individual has a job and/or is in a domestic situation, let them remain so. They are more likely to pay the freight and remain in their domestic situation and be less of a burden to their communities.
