Radials who want the conflict to continue for their own purposes. Just as Hamas fighters have reportedly done terrible things, Israeli settlers have burned houses containing children and attacked children. Palestinian children throw rocks and the Israeli troops return fire with “non-lethal” and lethal rounds. Israeli settlers literally attack Israeli troops to get at Palestinians. Palestinians resort to suicide attacks on the vulnerable. The Israeli casualties come in slugs, about once a generation, as Hamas or whoever is filling that role in Gaza or the West Bank/Lebanon decides it’s time to stir things up. The Palestinian casualties come steadily, week after week, creating new martyrs for the cause to celebrate and recruit from.
ReplyDeleteThis time Bibi is potentially leading Israel off a cliff, because he wants the fight, he wants the excuse to exterminate the Palestinians. Golda Meir was no lover of the Palestinians, but she would be appalled by Bibi’s descriptions of them. David Ben-Gurion knew when to show restraint, as evidenced by his Havlagah policies before WW2. That policy helped strengthen the Jewish hand in the resulting decisions about the British Mandate of Palestine, much like a more measured response here could keep the world behind Israel and force a real settlement in Gaza and the West Bank. But the disproportionate slaughter that I fear is about to occur in Gaza will poison that well for decades, and possibly strengthen Iranian hardliners that I am sure would love the idea of a chemical, biological or atomic/radioactive/nuclear weapon being snuck into Israel by Hamas. It’s not like they couldn’t do it, as this planning went under the Israeli radar for at least weeks, if not month, while dozens, if not hundreds, knew about it.
The reported slaughter of babies, women and children is abhorrent, but it doesn’t provide an excuse to do the same kind of thing back, despite what Bibi and other right-wingers in Israel say.
As Ronna Mcdaniel pointed out, even things like this are a good thing as it will return the former guy to the White house. Kind of a glass half full kind of thing,
ReplyDeleteThis didn't happen over night. This was years in the making. How many green lights did it take and where are they? There is a lot more situational information now. Turkey and Qatar have been funders of Hamas for many moons. Seems like they don't like the Saudi's playing nice with Bibi.
