Wicked Cold

The observation deck at Mt. Washington. NH:

The tower cam there:

Right now, it's a balmy 2degF there. Wind's light, too.

  1. Between six and eight feet of snow here so far. The slide off from the roof has completely buried the door. Briana made it to the grocery store Saturday by climbing out of the window and prevailing upon the guy driving the front end loader to dig the car out. Call that one luck.
I know lots of people deal with this kind of weather every winter, but I still don't get on well with it. Being disabled from a stroke, there's no way in hell I can get to the car from here (29 stairs down the hillside to the carport, still a couple of feet of snow on them after repeated shovelings). I may not be an elite, but I am hella coastal, as in this is the first time I've lived farther than fifty miles from the Pacific Ocean.
The power went out Sunday at about noon, meaning no lights, no internet, and no heater. That last one was kinda stressful, as it was getting pretty cold in this room by the time it came back on at seven. The cat is disgusted.
On the other hand, we really do need the water...

  2. During a recent freak super cold snap with 120 mph wind, the windchill was -100, frostbite in exposed flesh in 30 seconds.

  3. Back in the day pilots had this thing about not firing the helo until the temp got up to zero; would tell us brushrats it's because they didn't want us to be out hooking logs in sub-zero temps, and we'd spend often hours standing around a fire being cold and bitchy about being cold and bitchy. Hundred mile an hour rotor-wash gonna' kick it to a hundred below anyways so wtf, let's get it on! Warmer when you're working and in winter I can build as big a fire in the strip as on the landing.

I wouldn't want to be sitting still ~ yeah yeah yeah, they're moving around: left hand doing something different than the right, feet light on the pedals, but it's still sitting still ~ for hours in sub-zero temps.

Chuckling comfortably from my bayside cottage ...
