Every Cargo Airplane is Now a Bomber

The Zoomies have tested a weapon system that turns a lot of cargo airplanes into bombers. The Rapid Dragon is a palletized cruise missle. The loadmasters shove the pallet out of the back, a parachute stabilizes the pallet and then the missile launches.

The term "force multiplier" gets tossed around a lot, but it seems applicable in this case.

"Every Trash-Hauler, a Bomber."

  1. If I remember correctly, during Vietnam, C-130's would drop 10,000 Lb. bombs out the back to create "instant landing spots for helicopters". I honestly don't remember whether it was operational or experimental.

  2. Tsgt Joe, the BLU-82, was a 15,000 lb bomb with an extended fuse (itself called a daisy cutter) that was dropped from a MC-130/C-130 or CH-54 in a Vietnam to create landing zones.

  3. Its successor, the BLU-43, is a 21,000lb bomb that is dropped by a C-130.

Both the BLU-42 and -43 are bombs that get dropped on third-world opponents. A C-130 isn't going to be dropping bombs from altitude over a battlefield where there is a significant AAW threat environment.
