Your Sunday Morning Prop Noise

Gluster Gladiator, one of the last biplane fighters:

  1. What a throwback, 1918 haunts the 2nd world war. After the brit Norway clusterfuck the whole Gladiator squadron was destroyed, along with pilots, when German surface units sank their carrier. Most famous outfit was the last remaining UK air unit defending Malta, Faith, Hope and Charity, three Gladiators. Who hung on until a convoy could sneak in with monoplane Hurricane fighters. Or at least that's the story.

  2. Interesting bird, especially the fixed pitch prop! That was an oddity, in that the controllable pitch prop was already in use by most manufacturers at that time. The 'only' thing I can think of is that the 'thought' was it would be one less thing for the fighter pilot to worry about in a furball.

  3. I believe there was a version with a controllable pitch prop, this example must be one of the early models. I was pretty impressed by the speed. The old gal seems to gallop quite well.
