Search teams fanned out Wednesday at a Florida wilderness park to look for the boyfriend of Gabby Petito, the young woman who authorities say was killed while on a cross-country trip with him.
The search resumed around 8 a.m. Wednesday at the 24,000-acre (9,700-hectare) Carlton Reserve park, North Port police spokesperson Joshua Taylor said. Investigators say Brian Laundrie’s parents told them he had gone there after returning home without Petito on Sept. 1.
And this:
The last person seen with Kristin Smart before she vanished from a college campus 25 years ago on the Central California coast will stand trial on a murder charge in her suspected death and his father faces trial as an accomplice for allegedly helping bury her body, a judge ruled Wednesday.
Women get killed by their boyfriends/husbands every day. Women go missing every day. Indian women disappear from the reservations routinely and their deaths are all but ignored.
I am not minimizing the pain to the Petitio and Smart families. But let's also not ignore the plain fact that, save for the fact that their murdereded loved ones were pretty long-haired blonde women, nobody in the national media would have given two shits.
That thought had occurred to me as well when I saw the story this morning.
ReplyDeleteIs there a disparity in investigating missing women/girls of color? Yes, to some extent. But and it is a very big but, unless you have been involved in trying to investigate such a case involving in my own instances indigenous people you have no idea how frustrating it is to deal with people steeped in "Snitches get Stitches" mentality. And where are the prominent actors in the culture? Why are they not trying to get folks to open up and talk? Is BLM or Cher trying to open communication for investigators? No! They demonize the people tasked with investigating these crimes. I'm glad I no longer have to deal with the crimes or the heartache.
ReplyDeleteIn NEWS more money biz the old saw if it bleeds, it leads.
ReplyDeleteNext is Greek Comedy, the rich and/or powerful fail falls.
Scandal sells well too especially if it crosses race or gender lines.
Then its man bites dog or similar such.
The hierarchy does extend many levels all based on those
watching looking down.
FYI its never an everyone thing but most outlets where
this is observed have a yellow tinge.
If your of any other group or identity, not so much
attention either good or bad, unless the rich and/or
famous did it or man bites dog where the burn was
unusually noteable.
When you look at the number of people murdered, and distribution
of how they are treated in the larger media its not a pretty thing.
When you examine the "news" pay attention to how they present
the answers to the basic questions.
Who, What, Where, When and Why and where it applies How?
