Early in the pandemic, when vaccines for the coronavirus were still just a glimmer on the horizon, the term “herd immunity” came to signify the endgame: the point when enough Americans would be protected from the virus so we could be rid of the pathogen and reclaim our lives.
Now, more than half of adults in the United States have been inoculated with at least one dose of a vaccine. But daily vaccination rates are slipping, and there is widespread consensus among scientists and public health experts that the herd immunity threshold is not attainable — at least not in the foreseeable future, and perhaps not ever.
Instead, they are coming to the conclusion that rather than making a long-promised exit, the virus will most likely become a manageable threat that will continue to circulate in the United States for years to come, still causing hospitalizations and deaths but in much smaller numbers.
We need vaccination rates over 80%, preferably over 90%, to achieve herd immunity. That's about what we have gotten to with measles. It was vaccination and getting to herd immunity that relegated smallpox to the dumpster of history over forty years ago (smallpox was eradicated in North America nearly 70 years ago). Vaccination has eliminated the threat of polio summer. Vaccination relegated iron lungs to medical museums.
I know the anti-vaxxers like to claim that this is a matter of personal choice, that their decision only affects them. That, Gentle Reader, is a lie. Not getting vaccinated affects everyone around, it gives a disease a pathway to spread. Frankly, if not getting vaccinated affected only those who weren't getting their shots, I'd say "knock yerselves out, you want to take the risk of getting sick and dying, fine by me." But it doesn't just affect the anti-vaxxer.
It's not just personal choice, it's selfishness. It's just as selfish as deliberately puffing cigarette smoke into another person's face. It's as selfish as roaring up and down the streets at 2AM in a muscle car with straight pipes. It's an attitude of "hooray for me and fuck you." It's shirking one's duty to everyone else.
It is selfishness on an incrediby childish level.
So, please, get your shots.
And if you won't, then damn your twisted, shabby soul, forever.
It seems to me that an anti-vaxxer who says its their own choice to take a chance with their health is like a person who commits suicide with a bomb. It definitely can effect others if not in complete isolation.
ReplyDeleteSmallpox and polio are making a comeback. Those opportunist virii
ReplyDeleteseek anti-vaxers to reproduce.
They are also likely to get shingles in old age... yes, there
is a Vax for that.
Covid will be found in the antivaxes and will have a hosts to
mutate in. How is it that antivaxers don't mind hosting a
disease?
Freedom requires responsibility. The antivaxers are not responsible
participants in society.
*Those that claim they had it and are now immune, unproven.
*The antivaxers that are not Repub cultists, again a few percent
*The 45% of the Repubs or about 31 million claim they will not.
Think of that 10% of the population have said they will not
on partisan grounds or conspiracy myths.
That's not including those that are hesitant but likely will
and the small numbers that can't for valid reasons.
I think the rethugs are trying to get themselves to the edge
of an extinction level event.
Eck!
"It is selfishness on an increidby childish level. " In other words, it's republican.
ReplyDeleteThis is India's second surge. I've heard a lot over the past year about waves and surges and this n' that. This is India's second surge. I've done everything I was asked to do: masks and the rest of the nine yards, vaccine though I am technically a "anti-vaxxer". Now I'm tired of it. I have made sacrifices I am not accustomed to making, and I am tired of it. I have two brand new grandkids I have yet to see, and I am tired of it. Before this is over with I'm gonna' smash someone.
ReplyDeleteMy observation, based on historical precedence, 1918, is our second wave is just beginning. Oregon tops the list today, and my hometown tops that list. Stupid credit-card rich tourerists that have outstayed their welcome and their goddamned brew-pubs, Drunk Town USA.
I'm looking forward to things getting a little quieter around here. Little less trash ...
Oregon?
ReplyDeleteWhere they have had 2 to 4 Covid fatalities a day for the past month?
Maybe Biden's address to a completely vaccinated Congress could've been done without masks. Maybe easing up on the rules that allow no relaxation of restrictions post-vaccination would help. Maybe those in charge would be trusted by more if they had avoided issuing rules for us but not them.
I'm hoping vax rates will go up with the great reduction in demand. The lines were ridiculous for a few weeks.
Word, Comrade Misfit.
