Yet Another Force?
I don't pretend to understand any of it. Reading about the sub-sub atomic particles and quantum mechanics hurts my head. But the thing that has always disquieted me about "dark matter" and "dark energy" is that they hae always seemed to me to be fudge factors-- things thrown in to make the math come out to match the observations. This new force may be the answer to part of what makes the math come out right.

COMMENT MODERATION IS IN EFFECT UFN. This means that if you are an insulting dick, nobody will ever see it.
Adding a factor to make the math work was good enough for Einstein. It ought to be good enough for us...

I wish it was like phlogiston and the heavenly ether and crystal spheres but they tell us without this Black mystery stuff/energy we're spinning way too fast for gravity to hold us together. So, we don't know much at all about 95% of all the matter and energy in the universe? We are so primitive.
ReplyDeleteYou've got to go with the science though. Quantum computers exist and can in theory break any code through brute force attack. They claim. Our science can no longer be understood by humans.
Neutrinos were originally a fudge factor proposed by Pauli and refined by Fermi to explain where all the energy went during Beta decay. It took another ten years before a neutrino was detected.
ReplyDeleteA quibble with what's-his-name's "I am Death, Destroyer of Worlds" comment: not-so-much. Until we build a death-star that actually blows one up like in the movies, Hell's Belles until we can even get to another one, the best we can do is destroy the only part, that which we live in, of the only one we know of we can live on.

Peter Woit doesn't think so. The issue is how well the theoretical value is understood.
ReplyDeleteMaybe we are just getting started:
