The Gallipoli Campaign was Winston's Churchill's idea to knock the Ottoman Empire, "the sick man of Europe," out of the war. It didn't go so well, the Turks were far better at fighting than Churchill judged them to be.
Fortunately, in the next war, when Churchill advocated invading the Balkans, the "soft underbelly of Europe", those actually responsible for fighting the war paid him no heed.
Also, around the same time, the Turks got to slaughtering the Armenians in a genocide that, according to some accounts, gave Hitler inspiration for what he was about to order to be done to both the Jews and the peoples of eastern Europe.
For decades, the Armenians have been arguing that the United States should acknowledge that the genocide took place. Yesterday, President Biden fulfilled a campaign promise and did just that.

ReplyDeleteThe man that wrote "The band Played.." is still alive and our age, Eric Bogle. His other famous song is "Nobody's Moggy". It's terrible, typically Aussie dark humor song, about cats and big trucks. You have been warned.

Churchill had some whackadoodle strategic ideas and unfortunately got to frequently act on them. He kept feeding Hurricane fighters into France long after it was obvious the battle was lost. His diversion of British forces from North Africa to Yugoslavia and Greece destroyed ships and aircraft and troops the brits desperately needed. He constantly lobbied for an attack on the 'soft underbelly' of Italy and southern Europe that would likely been another Galipoli in that totally unsuitable terrain. Thankfully nobody in power listened to him on that score.
ReplyDeleteI had a Welsh history prof that absolutely hated him . Said he was the worst PM they ever had .
ReplyDeleteMentioning Churchill's or Thatcher's name in Wales is a good way to learn Welsh swear words. Watch out for the spit.
ReplyDeleteClancy Brothers did a really good (traditional) version, too.
