ReplyDeleteIt's about death toll. The death toll from WW1 was horrifying. The generals involved were using tactics that Napoleon would have recognized against modern machine guns and artillery. French population actually declined between 1911 and 1921, as they lost 1.3 million soldiers and 1.9 million people overall. The UK lost 750,000 soldiers and 1.3 million people overall.

Or less than 1/10th the losses of the British and French.
Losing a significant percentage of your population tends to make an event stand out more in your nation's psyche.
