Let's Buzz the Tower

A true story:

  1. Not quite as entertaining, but back in 1998, a controller at Detroit Metro Tracon (D21) bought a Piper Cub and was quite proud of it. He asked and was granted permission to fly by the tower. As slow as he was, he descended to near the elevation of the tower cab, putting him about 180 feet AGL. He circled the tower once and then left. Being the FAA (we're here to make your life difficult) he was asked his altitude. He said 500 feet above a sparsely populated area, 1000 feet over a populated area, and 2000 feet horizontally from any structure. He successfully was not violated.

  2. 1980 we flew a bunch of construction stuff from the rim to the bottom of the canyon so the "locals" could build a tribal center. When we flew out we were unfortunately below the rim, pilots got their tickets punched for a month. That's what happens when you gunrun the Grand Canyon.

    It was awesome.

Don't know if anything came of when St Helens erupted, and as the ash was headed east when we dropped down into the Colombia River Gorge so we headed west, nose down as fast as we could close enough to the water to raise a roostertail.

    It was awesome.
