The F-104 probably killed almost as many Luftwaffe pilots as did the RAF.

COMMENT MODERATION IS IN EFFECT UFN. This means that if you are an insulting dick, nobody will ever see it.
The aluminum lawn dart, eh?
ReplyDeleteActually was a decent fighter for what it was designed for -- which is not what the Luftwaffe used it for, thanks to bribes to politicians that forced it upon the Luftwaffe for a role it was ill suited for.
110 Luftwaffe pilots, to be precise. There aren't enough piston hours in the world to prep you to fly a tricked-out high-altitude interceptor in a low-altitude fighter-bomber role in European weather...;-(
ReplyDeleteI'll bet the survivors weren't amused to see the F-16 called a lawn dart.
From the album "Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters":
ReplyDelete"We don't just need a fair weather fighter"
"OK, we can make some modifications and call it the F-104G"
"104 G?"
"G for Germany"

Yep, killed a LOT of pilots due to mis-application of the airframe.
