Fifty years ago, the Eagle landed on the Moon.

Nearly seven hours later, Neil Armstrong set foot on the Moon:

Apollo 11 had a TV camera that was of a slower scan rate than broadcast TV. So the networks had to run the image as it appeared on NASA's monitor, which is why the image was pretty crappy.

The taped greeting was not played, nor was Mr. Gorsky wished any luck.

As an aside, it was during the days of the marking of the fortieth anniversary of Apollo 11 that Walter Cronkite died.

  1. I was eight, and a huge rocket nerd, and my folks sent me in the dining room with the spare TV to keep me from distracting their viewing and I was in heaven. I still remember the wonder in Cronkite's voice fifty years later.
