This Epidemic is Brought to You by Donald Trump, Jenny McCarthy, RFK, Jr., and the Rest of the Low-Wattage Anti-Vaxxers

Measles in the U.S. has climbed to its highest level in 25 years, closing in on 700 cases this year in a resurgence largely attributed to misinformation that is turning parents against vaccines.
And this:
More than 900 students and staff members at two Los Angeles universities were quarantined on campus or sent home this week in one of the most sweeping efforts yet by public health authorities to contain the spread of measles in the U.S., where cases have reached a 25-year high.
This is all on the whackaloon, dimwitted, conspiracy-theory-addled anti-vaxxers.

  1. Math says to expect about one death for every 1000-1200 cases. Children getting the measles tend to get pneumonia about 5% of the time and 1 in 1000 will suffer encephalitis. The most likely to die are those that couldn’t get vaccinated due to immune system issues, so all these selfish bastards who decide not to vaccinate their kids because of the anti-vax are threatening the medically fragile and the anti-gazers should be strung up!

  2. CenterPuke88,
Actually, in the United States, over the past several years, it seems as if we have either 1 or 0 deaths attributed to the Measles. However, based upon the predictions of the drug companies, one can expect around 1 death for every 10,000 vaccinations. In other words, more people will die from the actual vaccines than from the disease that they are being vaccinated against. I looked those numbers up last night, but of course, the CDC and the NIH are both hard to find actual numbers about such things, because it is against their agenda to have anyone actually believe that vaccinations are at all harmful.
I know, because I actually looked and found those numbers, I am one of the anti vax crazies. Of course, I have 3 biological kids and 2 adopted, and got them all of the shots that were recommended by the medical establishment. But I do understand those who are a little leery of toeing the line.

  4. The farther we get from the time when you just expected to lose one of your kids from "childhood diseases" the more prevalent the backlash will be against the vaccines that made that not be the case.
From a risk standpoint, the diseases are far more deadly than the vaccines, and using the successes of the vaccines to amplify their own risks is asinine.

  5. Er, pigpen51, given that 10,000 > 1,163 (actual number of cases per death in the U.S. during average outbreaks):

    1) Your statement about more deaths from the vaccination vs the disease is false.

    2) Vaccinated persons are still able to get measles, it’s just harder...much harder when herd immunity is in effect.

    3) Increasing unvaccinated numbers have compromised herd immunity, hence this outbreak.

    4) Children too young to be vaccinated and the immune compromised who cannot be vaccinated, plus the immune compromised from advance medical procedures like transplants, etc, rely on herd immunity. These persons are sentenced to a higher risk of death by the selfish actions of people who, unlike you, don’t immunize their kids, and who believe like you (sorry, it’s not a personal attack when you admit such, if you judge otherwise, Comrade, I accept your decision without complaint.)

    5) The falsehoods about vaccines have Ben around for decades, but one scumbag poisoned the well, and the conspiracy freaks ran with it.

  6. One death per 10.000 vaccinations?

  7. I was not able to quickly find the same study from the other day. I did find another one, which shows some interesting facts. These are from the Physicians for informed consent.
    26. Does measles cause more harm than the MMR vaccine?

The answer to this question is not known. In the pre-vaccine era, measles caused 400 annual cases of death and 100 annual cases of permanent harm; however, most serious measles cases are preventable with adequate levels of vitamin A. In contrast, the MMR vaccine causes 5,700 annual seizures, of which 300 (5%) result in epilepsy; and seizures are only 12% of the serious reactions from the MMR vaccine that are reported to VAERS. Furthermore, the Measles Vaccine Risk Statement (VRS) also shows that studies have not ruled out the possibility of MMR causing permanent harm four times more often than measles causes death.

    27. What is the importance of examining certain MMR vaccine safety studies from the early 2000s?

Certain studies in the early 2000s were the largest ever conducted that included control groups not vaccinated with MMR. These studies were a response to safety concerns about the MMR vaccine that threatened the mass vaccination program in the late 1990s.

    28. The measles mass vaccination program has eliminated endemic measles in the U.S. Isn’t this proof that the benefits outweigh the risks?

The available research and data have not proven that the risks of the MMR vaccine are less than the risks of measles, as described in the Measles DIS and VRS.
Given that there is far from conclusive proof that these vaccines are safer than the diseases themselves, should we not at the very least allow the parents the choice of whether or not to immunize their children from these diseases and also how close together they wish to have them done? And don't let my faulty research be an excuse for you to form an argument against some point. I might have misspoken and wrote one death per 10,000, when it should have been one incident per 10,000. The main fact is that the vaccines are not totally without side effects.

  8. Wrong. Again.

A lack of vitamin A can make measles worse, but there is no evidence that vitamin A will help adults with the measles

Measles used to hospitalize 48,000 people and kill between 400 and 500 people in the US annually. Now, it’s theoretically eliminated in the US, but crops up and spreads in pockets of unvaccinated people — like right now, in Washington state.

How many people are hospitalized for a severe reaction to MMR vaccines again? How many have died because of a severe reaction to the vaccine?
