Was to be the heavy replacement for the Bloody Paralyzer, the Handley Page O/100 and O/400, but never saw service. It was however a great player in the post-war long distance flight arena. A Vimy (with added tanks) is what Alcock and Brown used in 1919 to cross the Atlantic, non-stop.
ReplyDeleteI had the good fortune a number of years of meeting Peter McMillan and seeing the full-size Vimy replica whose construction he financed. As a fellow "homebuilder", I was somewhat blown away.
ReplyDeleteA little bit of modern flying experience magnifies the amazing stories that come from WW1 and inter-war flying books. You read parts of those books with your jaw hanging open, and the rest shaking it from side to side.
ReplyDeleteIt also makes me regret that all the allied generals that stood in the way of parachutes for aircrew weren't executed bloodily for treason.
