I had a job cutting Shingle Bolts out of Old, left behind Redwood Trees in Humboldt County. We were using a Bell to sling load out our work to a collection point. One day we waited what was 'too long' and hiked out to the collection point. The poor Bubble must have burned a valve as it visibly threw a pushrod out of the case. I was amazed at the time how much it was just a VW engine with a rotor. He lived, all was fine but he had a dimple in the rotors from a sapling that he sliced thru when he had to put it down, now.
ReplyDeleteI spent my 'military years' fighting Trees on the North Coast. They didn't shoot back but they'd still actively tried to kill us.

My father was a doctor in the WWII MASH equivalent, African and Italian campaigns. When the movie came out my older brother and I took him to see it. He came out shaking his head and saying, that's just the way it was, only crazier.

The war left him with a profound distrust of military. So many wars since then, so little attained, so little learned or remembered.
I think that was what I got a $5 ride over Humboldt Bay in at the Humboldt County Fair when I was a little kid in the mid-sixties. Or it looked just like it minus the army decals.

ReplyDeleteOne of my uncles fought in Korea. To his death, he never spoke of it.
A friend of mine's father was an infantryman in the Korean War. Her husband recently retired from a career in the Army. At one point, he was stationed in Korea and they did winter field exercises. He said that he has the utmost respect for the men who fought in those conditions.
