Self-Driving Trucks

The trucking industry and tech companies are spending a billion dollars a year, now, to develop self-driving trucks.

As I've mentioned before, I think the implementation of self-driving trucks will result in the largest elimination of working-class jobs since the railroads dieselized. Or robots took over the vehicle production lines. But so far, no politician is seriously talking about what will happen.

  1. Having driven a delivery truck for most of a million miles, and managed a distribution warehouse that sent multiple delivery routes out five days a week, I completely agree with your observation.
You used to be able to make a decent living as a driver. Now it's an entry level position, and the sort of folks who used to gravitate to it are being priced out, and the leftovers are being disqualified by drug testing.
Self-driving vehicles will bring their own flavor of problems to the situation, but after all of those miles in service, I can't say they won't end up being an improvement.

  2. Why should politicians care at all? Revolution is impossible, doesn't matter how many guns each citizen has. They've almost got all voting under control. The few Democratic politicians are shrinking in numbers.

Of course, as Americans die by the millions, there will be a mysterious drop in orders that need to be shipped. Businesses will have to invent new lies to tell their investors, and jack the prices on the survivors.

But any consideration for the old ways, the tried and true methods, the resistance to dangerous change... No fucking conservatives will ever care about that, and certainly not in time.

  4. Since long haul trucking is the most profitable for drivers, and will be the first to go robotic, short haul may stick around for a while. All those out of work long haul drivers competing for short haul jobs, driving the pay and rates down, and it will take longer for the robot trucks to make monetary sense.

  5. I wonder if the trucks will look like the ones that were in the movie Logan.
No cab just the grill for the radiator.

  6. My guess is the industry won't hump this dry hole too long.
