Keyless Car Security Alert

Apparently, those fobs are always talking to the car if they're in range. So if a thief has a device called a "relay box," to intercept the signal, they can then use that gizmo to steal the car.
West Midlands Police believe it is the first time the high-tech crime has been caught on camera.
...
The theft took just one minute and the Mercedes car, stolen from the Elmdon area of Solihull on 24 September, has not been recovered.
If you have a car that has such a system, precautions are advised.

A variant of this tactic boosts the signal to unlock the car, which is then burglarized. A colleague recommended putting all fobs in a foil-covered box or something similar when not being used.

  2. Is it a good way to define the active range by using the lock/unlock buttons?

  3. Nope, because they used a signal catcher close to the house, and a relay/booster by the car.
If the signal makes it outta your house, and they can get to your car, they can drive it off.
Of course, this technology has been in use for a few years now, but this is the first confirmed use of it captured by police.
