The Past is Still Alive- Aviation Ed.

A 16 year old girl, Caroline Dougherty, flew her first solo in this 1918 Jenny, powered by an original OX-5.

That's pretty impressive.

I read somewhere that back in the `30s, when even large airports were often grass (or cinder) fields, airport operators began forbidding tailskid-equipped airplanes from landing there because of the damage they did to the turf. The couple that I've seen flying (over a few decades of doing this) have had tailwheels, probably because landing a tailskid-equipped airplane on pavement would be like plopping the tail down on ice.

  1. Now THAT was a fun video to watch. I can still remember first solo, doing like that must be incredible. Learning to fly in that puppy has to be an experience, I wouldn't mind it at all. Good for her!

  4. I loved seeing her pull power on downwind. Somebody's teaching her right. There are advantages to learning to fly at a small field.

I remember my first solo, some 50 years ago, vividly, but I have zero recollection of the 2nd and 3rd passes. Sure wish there was video of it. But then again, I don't think I was as smooth as this lady.
