That Shit Can Kill You

One person is dead and nine others were hospitalized after they contracted botulism from eating contaminated nacho cheese sauce at a gas station outside of Sacramento, California, state and local officials said.
Eating at a gas station, should, as a general rule, only be considered when the alternative is actual starvation.

  1. Botulism can only occurs in anaerobic conditions, i.e., during the canning process. The gas station is as much a victim here as anyone who ate the stuff.

  2. Eating what is at a gas station, as a general rule, is of so little nutritional value it contributes to actual starvation.

  3. When I drove a delivery truck I occasionally ate a few of the fifty-cent hamburgers at the AM/PM in Half-Moon Bay, but that was in the mid-nineties...

  4. The cheese itself creates the anaerobic conditions.

Heat or acidity is the only real defense.
