Say, for the sake of discussion, that Trump's new hand-chosen FBI director looks over the Russian investigation and orders it closed.
Who, other than GOP party loyalists, will ever believe that nothing was found?
Comey got fired days after asking for more resources to pursue the investigation. Nobody is going to believe that he was doing that just to make sure that there was nothing there.
It's a coverup, people. And even the GOP loyalists, if they are being honest with themselves, know that.
Just like they did 44 years ago. They all knew that Nixon had done everything that he was accused of doing. But out of party loyalty, they closed their eyes, plugged their ears and hummed loudly, until the crescendo of evidence was too loud for even them to ignore.
And so it will go this time. Only this time, we all know how it will play out. Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan will willingly sacrifice any shred of personal honor that they may still cling to in order to save Trump.
You know what is really sad? If the situations were reversed, Trump would throw both of them overboard without a nanosecond's worth of hesitation and he'd not look back.
In the end, when all this is over and Trump is either in exile or in a cell, the GOP will look as pathetic and as foolish as they did in 1974. But I guess they can live with that.

I'm reading that far from being intimidated, the careerists among the feebies are pissed. If president fou-year-old was a little smarter, he might have been able to use Comey's quasi-wounded status as director to slow the investigation down long enough to figure a way to weasel out of it, but he's just not.
ReplyDeleteIt sure looks like he just never expected to win, so he sort of didn't pay that much attention to the consequences of what his campaign was doing, because what would it matter? And now that he actually has to answer for all of that stuff that looked like great trolling or tough guy stuff at the time, he doesn't know what to do.
And meanwhile the wheels are starting to come off of the government, with hundreds of positions unfilled and the obvious resulting bad decisions piling up around him and/or being shot down in the courts.
If he actually believed that he could just do it all himself without even trying to learn how, that would explain a lot of his more peculiar behavior.
I actually think he just stepped on it really hard, and doesn't quite realize that yet. If he can deal with owning his mistake in public, he might have a chance, but I'm skeptical about that.

ReplyDeleteI still do not discount that he ran to ensure Clinton's election, but the rubes were to rube to buy it. Not unlike his Reagan era promotion of Iranian and Russian wrasslers for the World Wrestling Federation, a guaranteed "win" for the as detestable as may be but none-the-less All American Boys.
