His Master's Voice

When President Donald Trump hosted Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in the Oval Office on Wednesday just hours after firing the FBI director who was overseeing an investigation into whether Trump’s team colluded with the Russians, he was breaking with recent precedent at the specific request of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The chummy White House visit—photos of the president yukking it up with Lavrov and Russian Ambassador to the United States Sergey Kislyak were released by the Russian Foreign Ministry since no U.S. press was allowed to cover the visit—had been one of Putin’s asks in his recent phone call with Trump, and indeed the White House acknowledged this to me later Wednesday. “He chose to receive him because Putin asked him to,” a White House spokesman said of Trump’s Lavrov meeting. “Putin did specifically ask on the call when they last talked.”
I thought one of Trump's claims to fame was that he was a PR whiz. Who the hell is in charge of optics at the White House, Jose Feliciano? "when they last talked"...how often does Trump report in?

Meeting with the Russian ambassador, allowing only Russians to cover the meeting, and doing that while 98% of sentient adults think that Trump fired Comey because of the FBI's Russian investigation has to be about the worst decision made in the White House since Lincoln chose to go take in a play.

  1. Yea, but how else can Putin install the necessary bugging devices? The CIA is right pissed!

  2. Where were you and your skepticism when Barry the O was doing the bidding of the House of Saud?

Oh, yeah, he wasn't Trump, so it was OK.....

  3. Lots are disturbed by trump inviting the "wrong" dictators. He's following orders to make the USA look "just the same" as Russia. His white house meeting with the Russian spy master looked just like a debriefing with further instructions away from witnesses. Job well done, comrade

  4. B, probably the same place you were when Dubya was liplocking with the Saudi Crown Price before strolling through the Texas bluebells while holding hands. The conservative outrage over that didn't reach 30dB.

  6. Oh well, it probably doesn't matter if the photographer dropped a bug in the oval office since Putin has his puppet running the place anyhow and it's more likely that the communications are running in the other direction.

  7. Doug, given the passive bug the Russians successfully placed in the Great Seal in the Embassy in Moscow, it's interesting to wonder what they might have actively done in the Oval Office with free reign...

  8. CP88: Yeah, I gotta say, every time I've caught myself saying "Nah, that's crazy" I've ended up with "OK, it's still crazy, but it still happened."
And having been a musician for the last forty years I do know that the technology of micro recording is downright amazing right now, and that's just the off-the-shelf stuff.

  9. Really? Using Jose F. to make a point about optics? It's far worse than that since the nincompoops in the White House have perfectly good eyes that are wide open. It's willful negligence to the point of treason. Has the entire place been swept for bugs yet or monitored for anachronistic signals? Perhaps it's passive listening and the devices will be picked up on the Russian spies - I mean diplomats next visit.....

The stupidity in the WH is monumental!

  10. Sounds to me like it's already "bugged", or at least Putin's Poodle, Our Tea Pot Dictator, wants us to think so.
