April the Giraffe Update

It's a breech-birth. The babies are supposed to come out head-first.

This may not end well.

I was wrong. Those were the front legs. The baby came out head first and when it was time, just slid right out. It's moving its head.

Damn giraffes have broken the Internet, too.

  1. They should label the feet better. RR, LR, RF, and LF.

  2. The Queen Of The World has been waiting impatiently for April to get this over with.

  3. The description at the YouTube Video said that that was how the baby giraffes were born. Y'know, the text under the moving pictures.

Glad it is OK and standing. I watched it this morning too.

  4. A simple rule that every farmer knows. If the hooves are pointed up everything is normal.

If the hooves are pointing down it is a breech birth and you have to turn the calf (or foal) by shoving it back in. Yes, I have turned a calf a couple of times.

  5. Al's right, and 'that' gets messy... And you never get those shirts/pants clean. But you do what you have to.

  6. Basically, the baby starts life with a 5-foot fall and lands like a pot of spilled spaghetti...
