  2. They didn't want to break their pointy-nosed little lawn dart, which wasn't designed to be rugged enough to regularly slam down onto a pitching deck and be hauled to a stop by a a tail hook.

  3. And the whole USAF tailhook is about 1/4 the size of a Navy one... With correspondingly less strength.

  6. Which of course is why the F-18 h as a big honkin' tailhook and corresponding reinforcements in its superstructure to deal with stopping quickly. 'Cause Navy airmen aren't fond of swimming :).
