Riiiiigggghhhhtttt; Affluenza Edition

A cynical observer might wonder if the fix is shaping up:
A Texas magistrate on Friday signed an order to examine Tonya Couch for "mental illness and mental retardation." The order said the court determined there was reasonable cause to believe she "has a mental illness or is a person with a mental retardation."
And her bond has been reduced to $75,000. Which seems to be a tad bit low for someone charged with aiding and abetting a fleeing felon.

  1. Serious time in prison is done by poor people. If the rich can't go to a country club style Fed jail, they ain't gonna go.

  2. I'm actually not too disappointed with the judge. The bail, at $75,000, is still very high compared with the usual in this level case (the normal "recommended" bail is $10-20k) The restrictions are pretty much "the book".

The most interesting thing to come from the coverage, locally, was the fact that the crime she is charged with can only consist of actions she took AFTER the arrest warrant was issued for her son. The Texas Lege left a huge loophole in the law...that they are now talking about closing up in the next session (every two years, in Texas). It's expected they will change the. Law to make the crime begin at the time the person becomes aware a warrant Is going to be issued.

  3. CP88, most state statutes are somewhat abysmally written. That gives lawyers and courts a lot of wriggle room.

  4. I read that "she is broke" so the bail was reduced. I know 'lawyers' and all (sorry Comrade I don't bunch you with "them") but doesn't this open a whole can of worms?
How can he have "affluenza" if she is broke? Also, the record says she paid his booze and stripper bills while they were in Mexico. She is not broke. Plus isn't that 'aiding a felon"?
So many fails in this case of how much is it going to cost me.
I can't wait to see the kid slip thru the court again like a greased turd.

  5. Uh W3ski,

The kid may not slip through court again because that greased turd may remain close to eternally stuck in Mexico. I don't know if you've heard, but it's even easier to bribe your way into or out of what you want there than it is here.
