"Not So Fast, Bucko"; Astronomical Edition

The State Supreme Court on Wednesday rescinded the construction permit for the Thirty Meter Telescope, a $1.4 billion observatory planned for the state’s tallest mountain, Mauna Kea, a revered symbol in Hawaiian culture.

  4. I'm with the protestors - the peak of Mauna Kea is no place for industrial development. Literally everyone is downstream from that peak, and will be exposed to runoff from the facility. Do you realize how many photons per night are discarded by a big telescope, most after a single use? That permit should not have been granted until a comprehensive recycling program for all collected photons is in place.
