  2. Marc, they should only be used by William Shatner. By anyone else, it looks moronic.

  3. One... Two was because of sticky keys on the old typewriters we learned on!

  5. The PC is Not a Typewriter

Explains it perfectly. Two spaces is wrong, unless you're using a typewriter. Modern word processors solved the problem. Don't keep adding to it.

If by "Shatner comma" you mean "Harvard comma" or "Oxford comma", then absolutely. Punctuation saves lives. There was a book about it titled Bear Eats Shoots and Leaves.

  6. Iftherewaseverawasteitswhitespace. I wrest in piece.

    coma, comma.

And that three or is it four period thing....

On punctuation Victor Borge had it right, punctuation must be phonetic POP!

An example of the Shatner Comma in use:

It, does, nothing, but, put, pauses, where, they, do, not, belong.

And honestly tell me you don't hear HIS voice when you read that.

    (h/t Latimesblogs.latimes.com for the example).

  8. The Shatner comma, is when, we have all these pauses, like Bill Shatner, except not as dorky, and not as cool.

  9. So, what's the end of this sentence about Fifth Ave. and should I capitalize the "A"? Two spaces after the 'Ave.' makes it clear that I'm ending the sentence there and should capitalize the following A. One space... not so certain.

  10. BadTux. Exactly. Two spaces signals that the period ended the sentence.

  11. ...and when you miss the period, folks kind of get jumpy.

  12. Two, dammit. We agree. All sane people agree.
