A Third of a Century Later

That was then.

Now, if the war were to be refought, it might be a different story. The Brits have one helicopter carrier and no jets capable of operating from it. They have two LPDs, six DDGs and 13 FFGs.

In the Falklands War, they had two STOL carriers, two LPDs, eight DD/DDGs, fifteen FF/FFGs. They had more ships which, for one reason or another, weren't in the fight.

On the other hand, the British garrison in the Falklands before the war was tiny. That's not the case, now, and hasn't been since the end of the war.

  2. Actually, the Argentinians in 1982 has a sizeable navy, and a decent air force. Ever since, all they did was buying used 1960's vintage planes from the U.S. (more Skyhawks) and Israel (more Mirage III derivates) to replace their own terribly worn-out ones.
Argentina today has less relative conventional military power compared with teh Uk than in 1982.

It's mostly the people who want mroe British military expenses or a larger RN who keep looking at one party's military downsizing only.
