My thought was "let's see a landing" too. There was a go-around, which was probably prudent. Why risk it when not-necessary? The sight picture and procedure can be practiced without a touchdown.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised they do takeoffs. Must be a really thorough FOD sweep beforehand.. shame to suck in some roadkill or something.
Sarah, the Russians solved the FOD problem for some of their airplanes by closing off the engine intakes and sucking air in through top-mounted louvers. The MiG-29 has them.
ReplyDeleteI understand how the telephoto lens foreshortens distances, but I'm still surprised they don't have a different solution to lighting the exit/intersection in the foreground. A number of those posts are in direct line of the section of road being used, and seem an unnecessary obstruction. Surely mounting the lights a little further back, and to the inside of the curve (out of the direct path), would have been equally effective with today's lighting.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, I assume that the sections of road most often used for this type of exercise had been chosen for their similarity to the "real" sections that would be used in an actual emergency. No point in showing a video to the enemy that allows them to bomb road sections preventatively.
here in germany, the Brits had short (30 yard) metal strips for their Harriers so they could land in clearings in the woods.
ReplyDeleteSeeing one, I put my old biplane into a steep slip, as if I were intending to land there. An NCO came running out of a tent, carrying an orange soccer ball, which he threw desterately into the air, in lieu of having a red Verey pistol ;-)
