Lockheed Martin Corp said on Wednesday it had made a technological breakthrough in developing a power source based on nuclear fusion, and the first reactors, small enough to fit on the back of a truck, could be ready for use in a decade. We shall see, I guess. Fusion power has been "twenty years away" for the last forty years and the big projects are not measurably closer to producing a sustained fusion reaction than they were two decades ago.
On the other hand, one underestimates the ability of Lockheed's Skunk Works to change the rules of the game at one's peril.
Either that or Palmdale will start glowing in the dark... :-)
ReplyDeleteNot an undesireable side-effect. :)
ReplyDeleteIf there's anything that could turn me around on the fate of our civilization, it would be the discovery of cheap fusion power. That's why I keep hoping for it.
ReplyDeleteI also bought a lottery ticket last night. Not to solve all of civilization's problems, mind you, but the effect would be a microcosm on my own life.
